Celebrating 20 Years: What’s Next for SMART Recovery®?

by Michael Walsh

As a Recovery Coach I meet my clients where they're at. I am also mindful that each client is different and will require different tools and support.

It saddens me to think that there are still people working in the field of substance use and addictions that self-promote their choice of recovery as the only way. Not only is that unethical – it is harmful to their clients.

Good to see the mainstream starting to recognize that options are important (as they have always been) for those in recovery.

No single treatment is right for everyone

"The best treatment addresses an individual’s various needs, not just his or her drug abuse. Matching treatment settings, programs, and services to a person’s unique problems and level of need is key to his or her ultimate success in returning to a productive life. It is important for the treatment approach to be broad in scope, taking into account a person’s age, gender, ethnicity, and culture. The severity of addiction and previous efforts to stop using drugs can also influence a treatment approach." – NIDA

SMART Recovery celebrated its 20th anniversary in Washington, D.C., September 26 through 28, at the National Geographic headquarters. Although substantial expansion of SMART Recovery’s size and influence is expected in the coming decades, this annual conference was an opportunity to appraise developments thus far.
