Gail Fraser
Peer Recovery Support Specialist Gambling (Practicum Student)
Gail is a dedicated Peer Recovery Support Specialist whose work is grounded in lived experience, authenticity, and a deep commitment to helping others find their unique path to healing. Following a pivotal life shift, Gail embarked on her own recovery journey from a 20-year gambling addiction. Through this process, she recognized that addiction was not the root issue, but rather a symptom of deeper underlying challenges—a realization that allowed her to build a life she no longer felt the need to escape from.
Gail’s personal journey also includes a late diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at age 35. Embracing her neurodivergence has further strengthened her belief that recovery is deeply personal, and that every individual possesses the strength and responsibility to discover what works for them. Understanding firsthand that meaningful change can bring intense emotions, Gail emphasizes breaking progress down into small, manageable steps to create a sustainable foundation.
Approaching her five-year recovery milestone, Gail channeled her experiences into a professional calling to support those affected by gambling harm. She holds an International Gambling Recovery Specialist (IGRS) certification, serves as a SMART Recovery Facilitator, and is currently completing her Canadian Certified Peer Support Specialist (CCPSS) designation. Reflecting her leadership in the field, Gail was recently appointed to the newly formed Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) Canada, where she provides vital perspective to lawmakers and industry partners.
Gail’s practice is guided by a few core principles she shares with those she supports:
- Finding gratitude in every situation.
- Practicing "the pause" during moments of heightened emotion.
- Taking ownership and learning how to "drive your own bus."
- Choosing your "hard"—recognizing that both addiction and recovery take work, but only one leads to freedom.
Originally born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Gail grew up in British Columbia and now calls the beautiful Kootenay region home, where she enjoys life alongside her supportive husband. Known for her compassion, authenticity, and strong communication skills, Gail walks alongside her clients to offer empathy, understanding, and hope.
